Eleven Numbers is the latest book written by Lee Child under an agreement with Amazon to produce for them short stories and novellas as Amazon exclusives.
The short story is a departure from his Jack Reacher novels. An American mathematics professor Nathan Tyler, unassuming though he is, finds himself unexpectedly thrust into a top-secret operation thanks to his niche expertise. The U.S. government has identified Tyler’s knowledge of “Kindansky numbers,” a fictional subset of prime numbers,as the key to deciphering a cryptic series of equations that could unlock access to Russia’s nuclear arsenal.
Tasked with attending a mathematics conference in Moscow, Tyler’s real mission is to meet with Suslov, a renowned Russian mathematician and his intellectual counterpart. The goal is to extract vital information that could shift the global balance of power. However, Tyler’s straightforward assignment quickly devolves into a dangerous game of subterfuge, as he is caught in a web of shifting allegiances and bureaucratic traps. A staged car accident lands him in a Russian prison, where he must rely on his wits and mathematical acumen to survive and outmaneuver both his captors and his handlers.
But, as the reader soon learns, the accident is no accident.
At just fifty pages, the read is fine read for an evening.
Recommended.
